Melissa Barrera Was Fired From ‘Scream VII’ Following Social Media Posts About the Israel-Hamas War

The sixth installment, which was released earlier this year, and 2022’s “Scream” were both directed by her.

Melissa Barrera is no longer a part of Scream VII. Following a series of social media posts in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas War, the actor was removed from the film.

After the initial publication of this article, a spokesperson for Spyglass, the company behind the Scream franchise, issued the following statement: “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hatred in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion, or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”

THR has gotten in touch with Barrera’s representative. Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, Barrera has written numerous posts regarding the conflict.

Barrera helped reinvigorate the brand with Scream, a 2022 film that grossed $137.7 million worldwide and featured generations of franchise cast members. The protagonist of that movie, played by Barrera’s Sam Carpenter, was Tera, Jenna Ortega’s elder sister. Barrera featured in Scream VI as well. The film debuted in March and made over $168.9 million at the box office worldwide.

Radio Silence, the director of Happy Death Day, will be replaced by Christopher Landon as director of Scream VII.

During the strikes by actors and writers, development had been delayed and filming had not started. Spyglass is now anticipated to reevaluate its ambitions in light of Barrera’s dismissal. Distribution for the most recent installments was handled by Paramount, which is anticipated to return for the upcoming movie.

Maha Dakhil of CAA, a prominent member of another Hollywood firm, has faced criticism for her Instagram posts concerning the crisis, one of which read, “What’s more devastating than seeing genocide? observing the denial that any genocide is taking place.”

Ms. Dakhil was consequently stripped of her responsibilities as co-chief of the motion pictures department, but she was still permitted to work as an agent.

Variety and other trade journals claim that Tom Cruise, one of Ms. Dakhil’s most well-known clients, informed CAA that he supported her.

According to reports, Cruise personally supported Ms. Dakhil last week when he saw her at the agency’s office.

On October 7, Gaza-based Hamas terrorists stormed southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and kidnapping approximately 240 others.

In retaliation, Israel went on the offensive to eliminate Hamas. The Hamas-run administration in Gaza claims that over 14,000 people have died there.

50 hostages who were being held in Gaza during a four-day ceasefire have finally been freed thanks to an agreement between Israel and Hamas.
